How many squirrels can you see?

A local photographer heard about the red squirrels at Hiddenglen and, being within five miles, where better to while away the hours of lockdown than in a forest! Kenny set up a hide, several feeders and a jump. The squirrels were quick to find the food and tell their mates. Last Sunday morning there were seven squirrels foraging. A great spotted woodpecker is often present, and the dozens of tits have caught the eye of a sparrow hawk who does a regular flypast. At night one can hear the repetitive bang of the nut feeder lid when the pine martin is feeding – sometimes for up to 40 minutes. We are now thinking of building a more permanent hide so guests can be sheltered behind one way glass.

We were lucky to have an expert wildlife photographer, Allen Holmes, stay here at Hiddenglen in September. All the photos were taken locally, the red squirrel here at Laikenbuie. Thank you Allen.

PINE MARTIN

We were lucky to capture this clip of a pine martin climbing a larch tree that we planted about 35 years ago. We were hoping to find out what animal has been scratching up mature cow pats. Could it be a badger looking for worms, or maybe a fox? We have only once seen a badger at Laikenbuie, foxes and cats are relatively common.

Camera Trap.

A friend asked about the many small scrapings beside dung pats in a grass field. She wonders if they are made by badgers, but we are doubtful they are big enough for a badger, so we set up a camera trap to try and find the answer. The first image is full size to show you the scene, but the rest have been cropped for clarity.

The buzzard features in several of the images, maybe mole heaps are a good source of worms.

Mr Fox comes at night when the hens are safely shut up – but that’s another topic.

A roe passes.

Can anyone identify these eyes? We are not sure who they belong to.

We still do not know what animal is making the scrapes – so hopefully there will be more to follow.
